Only yesterday I said to a friend in SXST, is there anyone ever who reads Butler and goes "right on, I totally get what she's saying"?

Good luck...

there are points in her work where I'm like "Oh, that makes TOTAL sense", but if I'm asked to rephrase or state what she's said in my own words...

not a chance.

thanks for the luck.

I'm speaking with Bobby on Thursday about the structure of the presentation, but as far as I know, the 'facilitation' model won't work because 1. He expects us to do a close read of the text and present our understandings of the authors work, and 2. we're supposed to present for 15 minutes and then guide the seminar through questions we've raised about the reading - so getting the group to discuss the reading is a part of the presentation, but only after I've done my own interpretation.

But I do appreciate the idea that Judith Butler is generally misunderstood... I hope that works to my benefit. I suppose the only person that may understand her is the professor. It's too bad he's the one that's marking me, haha.

you'll do fine Caleb. Just focus on the parts that you do know, and explain away. the stuff that you don't really understand, well no one does! don't be shy to admit that it's difficult. attempt it, and pose questions. being able to ask an intelligent question suggests that you gave it your best and can at least 'get it' enough to propose your own thoughts about it. make sense? I dont know anyone who indertsnads all or most of what Butler is saying! lol.
Have a conversation with Bobby about it and he will be able to give you some helpful advice, I'm sure;)

good luck!

Okay, I came across your journal super-duper randomly and I hope this isn't weird, but I feel your pain, and the exact same thing happened to me. Bodies that Matter is freakin ridiculous, perhaps moreso than her other work. What saved me was a book ABOUT Butler's work called, quite simply, Judith Butler by Sara Salih. It makes Butler's work totally understandable, and you will then be able to read it and feel smart, not like you are reading Alien language. Good luck!
