FIC: Waiting for the Miracle

Nov 16, 2007 02:51

I promised this fic, to those of you who care, weeks ago.  It's been finished for about as long.  I wrote it before the show's first season came to a close, and I knew -- from what I had read of what was to come -- it wouldn't contradict upcoming canon, as best I could predict, and should fit rather nicely between episodes 1x09 and 1x10.  Looking ( Read more... )

See This? It's a Neon Sign Saying "Read Me" lostcointoss November 19 2007, 06:41:34 UTC
First of all, that dust jacket is amazing. I absolutely love the look of it. The black and white looks great, and the blending on Hank and Becca is superb.

And then of course there's the fic, which is fantastic. I like how everything seems to be handled so delicately, and carefully, while still depicting such messy, unfocused moments. That the times you've chosen to write about seem so insignificant, and--with the exception perhaps the last scene--appear to say nothing at all about the characters actually expresses so much. The way Hank thinks something, then says it. The way he gets wrapped up in the prose in his head without noticing what's going on, and in the end doesn't care much at all about either. The way he drifts through such highs and lows with the same unshakable and cocky exterior. And those tender moments when he thinks about Becca. Perfect. It's all just so perfect, and so very Hank ( ... )

I'm so glad you like the dust jacket! Since I'd never made one before, I was really unsure about it, but people seem to like it so far, so yay! I was quite proud of the blend. Those shots of them were too beautiful not to use (in larger than icon form, that is).

I like how everything seems to be handled so delicately, and carefully, while still depicting such messy, unfocused moments.See, that's a big deal to me, actually. One of the things about my writing "style," or habits, or what-have-you (if you've seen the XF bits I posted, they were similar to this, with the vignettes and all) that worries me the most is that each moment matters. But I seem to be drawn to focusing on such unimportant or small things, and going on about those, while skipping over bigger things. I wish I knew why this was... I think XF started it, though. We saw so many big events, but I wanted to explore the little moments we didn't see. I guess that translated over to this too, huh? Long, rambly tangent short, I'm really glad you think it worked at all, let ( ... )

Wow.
Wow.
I really enjoyed that, even though I have never managed to watch more than two episodes of Californication. I thought the parts about Becca were especially poignant...

Ooh, nice! It's flattering to know that you enjoyed it, even if you don't watch the show! (Out of curiosity, are you interested in watching more, or is it just not your thing?) Either way very cool, and I really appreciate you reading and telling me so! :)

I'm definitely interested in watching more - the reason why I stopped was that it was showing at a late time slot in my state, and I kept forgetting to tape it. So I figured that I should just wait for the DVD box set. I mainly want to watch it for David Duchovny LOL.

I think it's difficult to enjoy fanfics when you don't know the fandom, and the fact that I did enjoy it goes to show what a good writer you are. You managed to get to the place beyond fandom, and write something that anyone could enjoy, regardless of whether or not they have watched the show. Basically, your writing is made of win :)

Awesome, I'm so glad you're interested! It snuck up on me and became my new favorite show, it's just fantastic. I'm not sure when the DVD box set comes out, but needless to say, I WANT IT. David is beyond fantastic in it, it's really something to see. :)

Wow, I don't even know what to say to that! Needless to say, I'm very flattered, and that means a lot to me. Thank you so much, sweetie.

Beautiful job, Zellie. You took Hank's mind and persona and slipped it on for a while, and it's a great fic. It's the first Californication fic I've read, and the first of yours, and it's very well done.

I don't read a lot of fic, especially X Files, because so many people get it so very wrong.

Gah, I just got the comment notification for this today! WTF, LJ? *kicks*

Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! And I'm very flattered you think I was able to communicate through Hank, since that was my primary goal. (Also, as far as anyone knows, this could possibly be the first Cali fic. I only say so because no one I know, including people who are looking, can find any yet! It's strange! And not a little bit daunting.)

Yeah, I'm very, very selective (read: picky) about the fic I read, especially when it comes to XF fic. There's just SO much of it out there, and the largest percentage of it is just... not good. I do enjoy digging for the "classics" and the really good gems hidden in there, though. I can't even tell you how ridiculously nervous I was, just posting the few little XF snippets I did, and that was weeks ago now.

I hope to see some XF stuff from you! I only really like Penumbra's stuff, haven't found many others that I'd read more than once.

Well, for the moment there's only the little bits of the larger whole, but people seemed to enjoy them.

It's funny you should mention Penumbra, because (a) I adore her writing, but (b) bardsmaid and wendelah1 apparently think I'm better, which makes my brain explode just a little. Feel free to disagree, I know I do!

Holy moly, that cover art!

I saw that you linked to it in my icon entry, I think? I really didn't know you made it. I LOOOOVE IT. The juxtaposition of their heads and the TEXT. Damn you, text is so hard and the thing I am worst at, and yours is so clean and balanced! I also love the levels of greyscale, too. PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY.

OMG, Nicole! How can anything top the work you and Dafna and Marina do? HOW. I tried, and did the whole thing from scratch (GOD, textures are a BITCH), but by the time I finished I had been staring at the damn thing so long I had no idea what "good" even was anymore, lol. I'm so flattered that you of all people like it!

I'm usually not so great with text, so I think I got lucky this time... somehow? I obsessed over the fonts for quite a while though, angsting over which ones would work with the look of the cover. STUPID TEXT. Anyway, YAY, you like it! *dances*

I'm a little annoyed that it's taken me days to get through this masterpiece, but I think I can forgive myself. This was absolutely wonderful and you captured Hank without seeming to try. I LOVED the little XF shout-out you threw in there. Particularly the part where Mulder never got laid and that's all Hank seems to do. Honestly, I'd like to know what Hank thinks of the fact that Mulder used his bedroom as a closet until Morris Fletcher got a hold of it. *chuckles* Brilliance. This is going in my memories, I think.

Aww, thank you so much! I can't tell you what it means to me that you think I not only managed to capture Hank's character, but in a way that didn't feel contrived or unnatural. Also, the fact that the little XF nod worked for everyone (without seeming out-of-place or corny) is great, too.

LOL, that's a hilarious thought! I wonder about that too, now that you mention it...

Thank you so much for taking the time to read, and let me know what you thought. I really appreciate it. :)

Seriously, not a problem. Hey, question: where'd you get your icons? I've been looking for Californication icons and they're few and far between so far.

I've actually seen them cropping up all over the place, now and then. My favorites are by call_me_daisy, diabolitos, unafraid_, agent00 and twt. Also, I made a few a while back, and intend to make some more in the future, when I get some more free time. A good place to watch for more is californicons. Hope that helps! :)
