So, it's looking like I'm going to have spend around $600 to fly home for Christmas. I can do this, but it would really cut into my savings account and I really would like to keep that to a minimum since that was supposed to be money set aside for getting my own place ( Read more... )

so there's this thing:
http://www.travelocity.com/info/fare_watcher/0,,TRAVELOCITY,00.html

but its functionality is questionable:

and give this a try: http://www.artoftravel.com/04cheapflights.htm

one of my friends got tickets all over europe and back for less than a grand at air hitch. http://www.air-hitch.org/

I used travelocity and got tix on United to Michigan and back for like $350. What helped lower the cost was travel dates. I checked all around and flights are more expensive around holiday times, so I'm traveling the weekend before thanksgiving and the weekend after, with a total trip time of 2 weeks. The farther you get from holidays, the cheaper the tickets.
And I have 2 connections on the way there and 1 connection on the way home. I think that helps cut costs too.

Also, I'm pretty sure that it's cheaper to fly standby, but I'm not quite sure how one would go about getting standby tickets.

I'd check some airlines' websites and see what kind of holiday deals they've got. here's Northwest's, for example.

Okay I have used this site before and have been very happy I checked on prices tax included for you would be around 412.00 something like that, I would hurry and book the tickets though they tend to go fast! Good luck.

Thanks, but I couldn't find anything for cheaper than what I've found thus far... I'll keep checking though :)

I think it's the dates I'm travelling that are making it so bad. I can't be very flexible, unfortunately, b/c I have plans around the trip. It sucks, but I think I'm just going to have to suck it up and cough up the cash :-/.

The very cheapest way might be a bit too craptacular and soulless: standby on the day of the holiday. Since everyone is celebrating on Christmas and New Years Eve, travel is pretty quiet...

My mom was explaining that to me in a last-ditch attempt to get me into Minneapolis for Christmas... I'm probably not going home, but if I am I'll be surprising them. : )
