i've never lived in a place where gang violence is as prevalent as it is here. at this point it is normal to have at least one gang shooting a week in my neighborhood. in one weekend, 11 people were shot and 3 killed. on saturday, 3 people were shot and one killed at a club i go to blocks from my apartment. chris and i walked past minutes before ( Read more... )

You've probably seen these, but there seems to be evidence that the Chop Suey shootings were more about personal conflicts than gang conflicts (here and here).
It would seem that this incident is similar in structure to the Philly Cheesesteak killings early last year. The media is all too willing to associate any violence among black youth and/or hip-hop culture with gangs.

That said, it is hard to miss the commonalities between gang and grievance violence - the chain of events from personal grievance / "disrespect" to violence that leads to cycles of retribution. The difference is that there is no organization (read: gang; that we're aware of) behind this incident to execute retribution in the absence of the original perpetrator(s) and victims.

But then I'm only going off of third-hand information.

Jen is facilitating a panel discussion on gangs w/the YMCA. Seattle Parks & Rec is also participating, I think it's open to everyone. It's in Auburn.
