Advice cataloguing a friends collection

Aug 22, 2013 22:39

This seems to be one of the few communities on lj for librarians that hasn't dried up (what happened??). Anyway I've been asked by a friend to catalogue her books. I'd like to download an appropriate database for free or for a small sum. Does anybody have any suggestions. She has a collection of around 2000 books.

I second LibraryThing. Love it.

My post was marked as spam so forgive if it posts twice but Readerware is a pretty good product. I won't post the link but add a dot com to that to get the site.

I started using it a few versions ago and don't have the updated version but it was easy to add books, customize headings, get reports and all sorts of stuff with it.

A quick trick on newer books if you want to use the Library of Congress classification--most newer books have the LC classification # listed on the back of the title page (usually toward the bottom).

I also use library thing for my book collection, I have just over 1000 books. Works great for a personal collection and you can catalog the way you want. (I pretty much developed my own system based on the number of items I had in the category - more like a bookstore and less like a library)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I should give more information. She's going to pay me so I want to do a good job (I would do it for free but she has insisted) . Initially I'm going to catalogue about 1000 books but she wants a searchable database that she can add new books with their subjects to herself. I'm not sure about a classification system I suppose that's something we can work out. I love library thing but I'm not sure library thing is idea, in this case I think it would be too minimal, I'll look into it though. The collection is just for her own use.
