For me, it was equal part logical thought and equal part impulse; I wasn't completely sure I was doing the right thing...but by the end of the first week I knew :D
Well.. what do you like to do? I don't mean for work, I mean actually enjoy doing? Meeting new people? Reading? Synthesized information and then sharing it with others? If you want, we can sit down and chat about it sometime. the difference between a career and a job is the razor thin line of knowing what you like to do, what you're willing to do for money, and what you hate being in a workable combination. It's not really about the profession or the position.
I really like listening to the stories people have to tell. I think people are fascinating, and so doing something where I could ask and answer questions about them would be awesome.
I do not like changing diapers and trying to get kids to be quiet when they don't want to be.
That is a great first step. There are a lot of customer service jobs that allow you to do just that--interview people to discover their needs and wants. It's not just therapy where you can get that information. For example, there is an aspect of this in HR rectuiting, social security benefitd administration, career or life coaching, etc. Now that you know you like human interaction where you get to play detective to match needs to wants (I'm extrapolating here) you can try and find jobs that have that element to it. Narrow it down by career interest from here--what sort of people would you like to work with? Abused? Underrepresented? Elites?

Hmm, that does narrow it down.
