A 30 days of ASOIAF meme stolen from wildefan and sternflammenden

Day 01: Favorite character from book/show - At the moment it's Tywin Lannister. He is awful and brilliant and has a backstory that is just wonderful and it's so easy to imagine that he has become what he thought he needed to be, which is not necessarily the person he would have become if things were ( Read more... )

I tend to see Tywin as a consistently intelligent villain; after repeatedly seeing the good guys win because their foe ends up acting dumb its a joy to see Tywin's competence. Still I think he's responsible for some long term problems that could end up being the end of the Lannisters. He never would have rearmed the Faith but his ravaging of the Riverlands led to the Faith's new prominence and to the lack of supplies for Winter and that lavish wedding did not help. I really feel for Cersei and Jaime having to deal with these issues.

Yeah, the war itself will probably lead to the end of a lot of things. It's such a fascinating chain of bad decisions and rash deeds all over the place. Sometimes it gets too much but it's one of the things I enjoy about the books - the feeling that they're constantly trying to clean up someone else's mess.

I love seeing his children trying to come to terms with the idea of him, too. It seems Jaime is actually doing a pretty good job at being Tywin at the moment, even if Cersei has his spirit and Tyrion has the long-term POV.

Even if I do hated the old bastard at times I can´t help but admire his brilliance. It is a joy to read about a truly intelligent villain (as opposed to whatever Cersei became in AFFC). And I think his backstory really adds much needed complexity to his character, specially his love for his wife which I found quite touching.

I must confess I love the Lannisters as a house and tend to feel more for them than for the Starks. So I'm not exactly objective in my feelings for Tywin.

But yeah, the Joanna thing is really touching and a great backstory for him. (And my main obsession in this fandom.)

I love the Lannisters a great deal more than the Starks, who kind of seem too perfect and leave me cold most of the time.
And I have lots of contradictory feelings for Tywin (can`t get over the Tysha incident, no matter how hard I try) but he is a fascinating character, as are all his children.
