So it's not just us

I saw Rent on Wednesday night. I've never seen it on Broadway, or off Broadway, or anywhere else. I've, of course, heard 525,600 minutes sung by multiple sources, but I've never heard any of the other songs from the musical. I knew a few things walking into the theater, and these were:

1. It's based off an opera called La Boheme, so it's probably ( Read more... )

outstanding review- much more valuable than anything i'd read in any other publication.
i spent all of wednesday during the day talking about how much i wanted to see the movie based on the pure fullness i knew i would experience leaving the theater after seeing it. unfortunately, that night i had to go to church, and then i dinked an old woman's car and basically, rent was out of the picture.

but now i'm inspired to see it again, and to do some writing, if you know what i mean.

happy thanksgiving with love,
bailey

I use La Vie Boheme as my theme song for what Maggie Walker used to be like. I wanted to change a few of the lyrics to get it past the reviewers and then preform the orignal on stage for talent show, substituting "In honor of the death of bohemia" with "In honor of the death of Maggie Walker"

That's a beautiful idea. Please do it--I will help you in any way you need.

I'm considering it. I might do the changed lyrics on stage and use the "in honor of the death of Maggie walker thing" and then use seniors instead of the characters.

Example:
In honor of the death of Maggie Walker
Rachel Easter, back from her exclusive one night engagement
On the seventh street lot
Will preform Native American tribal chants
Backwards
through her bow-corner
While accompanying herself on the electro chello
Which she ain't never studied... (some of those lyrics are off though...)

If you could find people interested, I'll do it.

I want to see it, but I'm a little bit nervous. blah. I won't rant to you if I hate it.

As for the LA critic, though, her review makes more sense if you take it in context of where she's living. LA is pretty much the "Unique And Bohemian and Indie and Struggling Artist and You Don't Understand My Art and All My Clothes Are Vintage and My Style is So UNIQUE Check Out this Granny Dress" mecca right now.

It also evidently makes more sense if you haven't seen the movie. And meh, I don't know when LA became indie. I really don't think that anyone, actually, living in LA can call themselves indie. You're either ethnic and struggling to stay out of a street gang, or white and paying shitloads of money for a single apartment. There's no real bohemian niche in LA that you could find in NYC; I dunno, maybe I'm just not up on my US cities' pop culture.

I'm not saying I agree with the review (how could I?), but I think I can say with some confidence that fitting the "bohemian" image has become the thing to do in the last couple years there. Maybe not in the inner city, but certainly in the ritzy parts and in the party scene. I see these people online a lot and they annoy the shit out of me. If I actually lived there, I think I'd be a lot more annoyed. but whatever.

you have to admit, though, that the bit about tapping your ferragamo heel to the music about not making the rent was pretty good.
