Reading this made me angry.  I know I might be stepping on some toes but honestly, there's a serious blood shortage here in the United States. And the fact that SDSU just got an award for donating more blood than any other college ( Read more... )

It's an outdated law, but technically you CAN donate blood if you are a gay man as long as you haven't had anal sex. Gay men can donate if they haven't had sex (I think in the past year or something). Lesbians are allowed to donate. It's due to an increased risk of an HIV infection in the gay community. At least, according to the FDA

I think it's an outdated law, but at the same time I think it's stupid to ban blood banks because of this. If anything, people are more aware of it and can just check the "no" box when it asks you, "are you a male that has had anal sex with another man?"

The Koala thing last year...they actually got mad about it because the letter specifically named a person. All the others were directed to unnamed people. Not that I'm defending them. They're a waste of paper. But just so you have the whole story... Now for the main reason of your post, I agree with you. I think the LGBT community often times get caught up in their own issues and can't or won't look at the bigger scope of things. The law IS discriminatory, but instead of banning the bloodmobiles on campus, why don't they take it up with the Red Cross directly, or whoever is responsible for those laws? And not to be rude, but would they even donate blood *if* they could? What I don't understand though is why it's only gay men that are pointed out? A lot of straight people have anal sex also... And why can lesbians donate blood but not gay men?

This world confuses me.
