My husband's first language is not English. He has made (or continues to make) some mistakes that I think are really funny. I thought I'd share them here ( Read more... )

but she said she was a senorita

That is adorable! :D

I love these kinds of mistakes from people who are proficient in a second (or third, or fourth) language but still make occasional lapses, and I definitely don't think it's mean-spirited to find them funny/cute (especially since you're learning a second language as well).

And I make sure to keep him entertained by calling my kid's favorite Israeli game "what's in the box" "what's in the monster." Box is mitzbetset. Monster is miztfletsetThere's a whole range of Hebrew words that my brain has cross-mapped, even though in some cases they don't even sound that similar, like "ephrohim" and "ephronot" (so that whenever B tells one of the kids to pick up their pencils, I get a visual of baby chicks scattered on the floor), or "eshkolit" and "etstrubal" ("Do you want some of my pinecone ( ... )

Why I would remember the words for vampire and peasant but not the other ones is beyond the scope of this comment... :P

Brains are funny like that. And I'd be amused by the children's book.

As I was cleaning up after dinner one night, Q asked me for a matanah. He usually helps me clean, and I thought he said matatay (broom), so I gave him his broom. He looked at me in disgust, like he was really, really offended. I learned later that matanah means present. It was the first night of Hanukkah.

I would really enjoy those kinds of mistakes too. :D

My husband is British, so we speak the same language, but he pronounces things differently, obviously. I used to make him say "percolator" over and over again, because it sounded so cute. One day he sent me a bouquet of flowers with just the world "percolator" written on the card.
