A Tide Taken at the Flood (Pike, PG-13) 3/3

Author's Note: When I first got the idea to write about Pike, I assumed that the nerve of an able-bodied person writing about disability could be mitigated by appeals to The Future or to canon. Unfortunately, other than the fact that he's in a wheelchair at Kirk's ceremony, the movie gave us nothing about Pike's condition. The movie script mentions ( Read more... )

I love this - spot on characterisation and a convincing explanation for what went on behind scenes to get Kirk to Captain of the Enterprise.

I particularly liked Pike's thoughts / reasons for resigning his Captaincy and Spock's assessment of Kirk, which so neatly encapsulated the reasons he and Kirk complemented each other so well in TOS.

Yes, I think you're exactly right. In the movie, they managed to do a great job of showing, in a short time, how Spock is a bit too wedded to convention and Kirk more than a bit to willing to toss it away. What's interesting is that they're both so young and inexperienced. I imagine Admiral Nogura is going to be up late at night worrying about these kids driving his trillion-credit car.

Thanks so much for commenting, and for your slightly scary icon!

This is amazing; probably the best gen fic I've read in nu!Trek, and easily one of best overall. You have a wonderful way of words and of characterization. This is a beautiful story, through and through. Thank you for writing it.

...and you wrote about one of my nu!Trek top 3, so I approve on a fangirlier level as well. ;)

That's a tremendous compliment--thanks so much!

I agree, Pike was one of the real gifts of nu!Trek--he brought a kind of Naval-era sense of gallantry to the proceedings and nicely balanced out all the Hot Young Things. I really hope to see him back in the next movie.

I think you nicely summed up the reason I really liked him (unlike poor PilotEp!Pike, who really didn't have a lot of a shot for characterization,) even if I hadn't really put it in words yet myself. (It's all that left brain-right brain stuff, I fear.)

I believe I listened to an interview with Mr. Greenwood that sounded promising for his return, but all we can do is hope at this point.

I must have read the same interview. Not to say he can't get left on the cutting room floor, but clearly Pike was a popular character, and it's nice to have an admiral who isn't a complete d*ck for a change. (I recently listened to a podcast talking about the depiction of military chain-of-command on TV, and it was pointing out that higher-ups are almost always clueless asses.)

Guh. Reading this left me satisfied, in a way that the movie didn't; it's a quality to seek out in the greater category of Long, Brilliant Trek Genfic, and boy have I found it.

Thank you! I wouldn't be too hard on the movie: there was a lot of business to take care of in 2 hours. However, I wish I thought that JJ/O/K really had everything worked out. By my calculation, the Academy academic year would have to end before March for Kirk to take over the Enterprise at 25. Oh noez, Star Trek has made an even bigger nerd of me!

This is wonderful, seriously wonderful. I'm facinated by speculations of the huge gap in the movie and this a brilliantly done creation of all the scenes JJA knew were there but didn't film. You really hit all the notes perfectly.

It's also a beautiful charactor study of Pike, and to a lesser extent, Kirk and Spock. I memmed it as STXI missing scenes, Pike's POV.

My brain just won't let go of the movie, and I'm sure it will get worse when the DVD comes out. I've seen semi-jokes from writers and directors that real fans want movies to be 10 hours long, and I'm afraid I fall into that category. Thanks for reading, and your icon is making me feel like an underachiever.

The jumping-around style was fun to write, and I hope wasn't to confusing because we all know the timeline so well.

In my mental alternate reality, Kirk serves as first officer under Pike for a few years (maybe while Spock is off doing his filial duty on Vulcan). I think they'd make a fantastic team. Anyhow, thanks for reading and commenting!
