A Tide Taken at the Flood (Pike, PG-13) 3/3

Author's Note: When I first got the idea to write about Pike, I assumed that the nerve of an able-bodied person writing about disability could be mitigated by appeals to The Future or to canon. Unfortunately, other than the fact that he's in a wheelchair at Kirk's ceremony, the movie gave us nothing about Pike's condition. The movie script mentions ( Read more... )

Wonderful character study of Pike and the others. Beautiful scenes. Beautiful inclusion of the possible political aftermath.

Too many good things to cite. Will come back for a re-read, because, woah.

I so need a grovelly icon for comments from especially good writers (of which there are more than a few on this page). Thank you, thank you, and I am raiding your journal for all your wonderful, recent stuff even as I speak...

Very much enjoyed this story! Pike was fantastic, and all the other characters just made this so interesting. Loved the interaction between Spock and Pike particularly. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! Given what Spock was willing to sacrifice to Pike in TOS, I think it's interesting to speculate on their relationship. Was it just Spock's sense of loyalty and decorum, or was there a deeper connection between them? I'm so glad Pike made it into the reboot!

Wow. This is absolutely amazing. I have such affection for Pike, and there's so little out there that has approached the relationship between he and Kirk in the wake of dreams unfulfilled and this was completely everything I'd been looking for. Really, really strong characterizations, lovely writing. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

No, thank YOU for your very kind comments! Yes, I love some Pike--what a great addition to the Trek canon. I've heard a rumor that Robert April (the TOS first captain of the Enterprise) will figure in the next movie. We can only hope that he's played by an equally foxy distinguished character actor.

Because he LOST HIS SHIP after, like, 10 minutes of getting to be captain

I KNOW. It's especially brutal since, according to the whole "universe trying to right itself" logic, he was more or less doomed to lose it. But yes, they don't become starship captains for no reason; if anyone could learn to roll with the punches, it's Pike.

If you write more of Pike's world, I will absolutely enjoy reading it!

Well, there's a thought. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!
