In our neck of the woods, non-profits (like Childrens' Hospital, Humane Society, some inner-city youth organizations) accept books for a book sale. Maybe someone in your area does the same? Would be a bonus if you could get a tax receipt for it, although I wouldn't hold your breath.

We typically just dump them at the local thrift store, though, because the book drives never happen when we need them to.

My boss has created a library of used books in one of the empty cubicles. So, whenever there's the rare occasion of Beth and I purging books, I'll probably add them to that collection. Although, I am still looking for a better place to take them.

It may be worth contacting them first (and I don't even know if they're still around), but The Armadillo's Pillow in Rogers Park used to be a great place to find very cheap old used paperback books of that type, so that is one place that might be interested in buying them off you.

I put them up on Amazon, on the used book market. It means waiting 3 or 6 months to determine whether they sell or not, but you'll probably manage to get rid of a few that way and recoup a few bucks. And any that don't sell can be donated or sold directly to used bookstores.
