My world has been rocked. And not in a good way.
45 minutes into my autodidactic yiddish lesson--that's right, I just spent 45 minutes looking at Yiddish words on the internet--I made a startling discovery, a discovery that should greatly disturb any former members of Mr. Reevesman's fourth grade class:
"Shmeckel" means "little penis."

The real question at hand: did he know?
Supposedly, it is derived from "shminkle," my own creation. This fact would seem to clear him, yet one must wonder, why not just stick with "shminkle"? Why twist a fourth grader's gibberish into a perverted foreign word?
Whether he knew then, knows now, or will die ignorant, one thing is sure: he is damn lucky there were no yiddish kids in our class.
