IWoSC Panel

Apr 29, 2009 02:03

I attended the Independent Writers of Southern California's annual Literary Agent's Panel last night and learned, among other things, that the Endeavor has merged with William Morris. As the trilogy is being shopped by an Endeavor agent, we're wondering what that might mean for our project, but as of yet, we haven't heard anything. I think in ( Read more... )

That's very interesting. I heard at my teeny writers' conference on Friday that several smaller publishing houses have been absorbed into larger ones in the recession, so it makes sense that the same thing might happen in film.

William Morris is a big name. Even I've heard of it. I guess I hope you wouldn't get lost in the size of it, but maybe I worry too much.

The trademarking thing makes sense; it explains why the HP series has been published by Scholastic and the films by Warner Brothers, I suppose.

This trilogy is the screenplay your father started, is that correct?

My satellite writer's meeting isn't until the 13th so some of the ramifications of the merge will be better known then. However, having been around the block some (four studio mergers), I know the merger allows for a couple of things: judicious pruning of deadwood, and keeping William Morris at the top of the pile in contention with Creative Artists Agency. Endeavor has been trying to break into that top echelon since its inception fourteen years ago, and now they're there.

We are a little concerned about being swallowed by the behemoth, but there's little to be done about it at this point.

The trademarking thing does make sense, and it also makes me wonder if JKR's epilogue wasn't, somehow, a contractual obligation. It was such a departure from the narrative voice she evolved over ten years. I find it difficult to believe that a woman who was as canny as she could have seriously thought it would work.

You're quite right. The trilogy was my dad's initially. Who knows what will happen with it now, but it's being '

Might not being absorbed into a bigger agency be good? More heft? *crosses fingers*

Despite having taken a course in Entertainment Law, I didn't know that about trademark (or maybe I just forgot--the copyright part made more of an impression, and it has been years now). Interesting. Especially given the implications for an aspiring author with a possible series.

Definitely more heft, but a lot of dross to cut away before you can find any gold. Still, we're keeping our fingers crossed.

The trademark thing really resonated in the auditorium, at least with the writers. I found it interesting that none of the agents reacted at all; which I took to mean they knew about it, but it wasn't material to their day-to-day processes. As a writer of a possible series, I took it to heart.

Woah! Everything is really starting to happen, isn't it?

I hope this is another step along the path to where you want to be.

Hugs!

There are so many possibilities, but yes, it might be starting to happen. Although this is all administrivia, it seems to be necessary administrivia to get where I want to go.

It also means I have to carve out writing time and make it sacred, or I'll never get it done.

Do I know that feeling? Awake, non-fuzzy and non-hubby time seem to have been non-existent for the last couple of weeks.

Oh, my dear, that's rotten.

Although it's probably nice to have so much time with Brad, but frustrating not to have anything written on the page.

I'll be thinking of you, and sending your muse sparks of ideas.
