A little of both, I think. The competition part is less than I expected. The community part manifests itself more in cliques, which I think is actually a good thing. I usually study with 3-6 people - I couldn't study in a group with 60 people! So cliques are natural and expected and somewhat helpful. They get bad when different cliques hate each other, or people don't feel they can intermingle between cliques. This hasn't happened yet (much).
I believe all first years have their writing class on Friday and the rest of their classes on Monday through Thursday. I try to get my writing assignments done before Thursday, so I don't have to do anything Thursday night, and then Friday morning I go to class from 9-10:30 and then I have the rest of the day. It's kind of like a three-day weekend, considering if I had Friday off, I'd probably sleep past 10:30 anyway. Like I say, I believe that's the situation for all 1Ls, but I don't know about upper level students. I do know that the law building is a lot less busy on Fridays.
