The world of Fire Candy is one that can easily be summarized in one word: Hell. But it wasn’t a new war, an epical catastrophe or the appearance of a new, stronger species that caused it to become that way. It was just the humans being the way they are.
It‘s the year 20XX and the big majority of humanity has lost its ability to reproduce due to an unknown natural reason that had been coming their way for a very long time. Fearing the suddenly very likely prospect of total extinction, leading scientists tried their best in order to find a remedy to this ‘infertility problem’ and, in a highly questioned project, finally created the ‘Halfs’, a new subtype of bio-engineered humans that had their genes mixed with that of animals in order to make them fertile. Even though an uproar of disgust went through the masses at the prospect of having tube-bred ‘half-animals’ as their handmade saving grace, the Halfs proved to be usable and the government pushed the project through to mass production. The series begins with what could be considered the ideal state of the world for Leo and his friends. They race, do drugs, fight, go to school (sometimes) and face other daily trials like falling in love, facing ostracism and the like. The worst that happens is the occasional death of somebody thanks to the effects of the Fire Candy they take, but that too stays limited to the times when they race - they might be the damned, racing on the fastest shortcut on the highway to hell, but at least nobody ever dies alone. This last solace gets shattered when Akito, Ryoki’s girlfriend and Leo’s secret flame, dies from the Candy - right after she and Ryoki lost their innocence with each other. Yeah. Ouch. After this, Ryoki loses it for good for a while, giving himself up to drugs and slowly increasing madness

-but this one turns out to be the flash of the detonation of an atomic bomb. When the prize for Fire Candy suddenly dramatically rises Leo half-jokes half-suggests that if they can’t afford to buy the Candy the normal way anymore, then they should just go and take it from those who can. And that’s what they do. Ryoki names the gang ‘Jammy Angels’ and leads them in their increasingly brutal attacks: first against unlucky junkies, later against the drug traffickers under MUTE themselves in the megalomaniac hope that they could usurp their place
