I completely feel your distress. For two years, our car was totally unreliable and we actually missed out on the weddings of several close friends largely because of it. You have a few options- How much does it cost to fix? You could at least take it in and get an estimate and then decide from there whether or not it would be worth it. How about flying? I know my sister flies home from Boston regularly and it's really not too expensive because it's so close. That way you would only rely on friends to drive you to the wedding itself, rather than bring you up from PA. The other option is a rental car, although that might be pretty pricey. Also, I'm not sure, but there might be age limits. Something worth checking out though. Lastly, I'm pretty sure that Aaron took a train from upstate NY to visit me, so that might be something to look into. And the other option is talking to your mom and seeing if she'd be willing to lend you the car just for a weekend.
