Birthdays in the Real World

I guess everyone has to have one of these. When you realize that birthdays aren't really that important anymore. When you're 5, you go to Chuckie Cheese, everyone in your grade goes, you get goodie bags and cake, and have the time of your life. I guess I wasn't really expecting all that...I was just expecting something great. Instead, I got ( Read more... )

Aww, we love you Lisa! I'm glad we got to see you for a little bit tonight even if it was somewhat anti-climactic. Though I rarely had my birthday really be blown up into more than a family affair anyway, I understand what you're feeling. As of late my birthdays have probably been more ordinary than anything else. I didn't even tell many people my first year at school, and this last one I was booked for literally every second of the day and the 12-24 hours on either side, so celebration was pretty non-existant.

I guess I have wondered what the big deal is, since I've never made one myself and been okay with the fact that others never elevated mine much either. Your statement that it's more about people being happy that you were born is insightful and dead on I think, and perhaps articulated in a way I hadn't thought of before ( ... )

Everyone knows how much I love birthdays. I keep them written on my calendar far in advance so I have time to prepare. I guess you could call celebrating birthdays a hobby of mine. So I'm here to give you the "why."

My mother doesn't believe in birthday parties after the age of eight, so I was always jealous of the kids who got to have big parties. Once I was old enough to think for myself I realized that (in my opinion) the purpose of a birthday is to remind a person how special his particular life is. And I wanted to make sure that message got across to as many people as possible.

Sure, everyone has birthdays. Sure, the event of being born isn't a unique one. But you're the only one who was born as you. My most favorite Lisa in the whole wide world. Not every birthday gets as much celebration as it deserves (my birthday last year was the worst one ever) but that doesn't mean you aren't being celebrated.

Can't wait to see you next week! (and there's a present involved!)

Happy (belated) Birthday Lisa! Sorry I missed you day of quasi-celebration. Don't feel bad that all the fun didn't happen on one day. We'll make it up to you. And also don't worry, we didn't forget you, we celebrate the fact the we're lucky enough to have you with us on this planet everyday we know you. :-) And to help cheer you up, let me know when you have some free time so I can give you your present.

Lot's O' Love!
