Common?

Is it not common knowledge that it is inappropriate to speak above a whisper in a library?
Is this something they're not teaching children these days in school?

It naturally seems to follow that you don't pick up a cell phone in a library, nor carry on a conversation when those around you are studying.  That's just common courteousy.

There's a study room in my dorm that is so quiet, I can't actually study there. Every single time I shift in my chair, you can hear a loud grating noise which echoes in the room. I end up getting tense from the effort not to fidget, and I feel self conscious for every single throat clearing or nose blowing.

I haven't tried our library yet, but I'm going to do so today. I'll let you know.
