read something by the marquis de sade. he wrote pornographic romancey novels in 18th century france and was imprisoned by Napoleon for it. it can get extreme, but the writing is beautiful.

oh hells yeah! i can't say that i have read anything of his, nor have i seen the biopic "quills," but i want to, which must account for something. also, the word 'sadistic' is in direct reference to him. very good advice.

Yea, you will be surprised/disgusted by the depictions in his work. I've read Justine, Philosophy in the Bedroom, Dialogue between a Priest and a Dying Man, and about 1/3 of 120 Days of Sodom (which became too...sadistic for my taste). I recommend starting with Priest (it is short), going onto Philosophy in the Bedroom, and then, if you like his writing and want to see it implemented in the form of a novel, read Justine. While they say 120 Days of Sodom is his masterpiece, I find it shocking, uneventful, and repetetive if you have read his other works. enjoy!

heh yeah i've read a bit of the marquis de sade... rough reading, that is. haha i think i prefer stories with a bit more romance and plot, though. but yeah perhaps i shouldn't be casting stones as i haven't read any of his works in their entirety. pirate zach is way into the marquis.

I once read a romance novel with a time-travel theme. I must have been about 13. It was about some chick who went back to medeival times with a handsome knight. CHEESE!! It was my grandma's book and I read the whole thing, and I almost started reading more, but luckily I had to go home and I was saved.

oh c'mon man! yeah i think i've read that one... lol. i got into the whole time-travel romance novel thing when i was about 12... there was a series by Caroline B. Cooney, the first was called "Both Sides of Time," then there were 2 others... "Out of Time" and something else i don't remember. then i read "Timeless Love" by Judith O'Brien and there was just no hope of not adoring these cheesey love stories. i'll lend you a couple if you want ;o). see ya tomorrow! yayyyy i can't wait! ((got the champagne! :) ))
