I find the tiny screen of my netbook terribly annoying when I'm trying to do actual WORK on it--like a document or spreadsheet. It's fine for surfing. And I really miss having a proper numeric keypad, since I input lots of numbers.

We just got Netbooks at work to replace out laptops.

The Netbook BLOWS.

Tiny screen, squished resolution, causes eye strain, programs that used to fit neatly on the screen now require scrolling to work (like our attendance database that we must log into 3 times a day)--Terrible. Just terrible.

You could, however, use Google docs for your word processing and use library computers for that when possible.

Enh. Most of the places I do research have very very restricted use of their public computers - 10, maybe 15 mins at a time.

Lenovo and Dell both have outlet stores on their websites. I dunno if they have what you're looking for in your price range, but it's where I got my laptop (thinkpad) and my fiance got his (dell). They can have some pretty good deals on refurbished or returned laptops, and in my experience they last pretty well too. I strongly prefer Lenovo, but I'm a bit of a computer snob, haha, and they're kind of expensive.

I do like Lenovo... And some of those are in my price range, actually. A thing to consider.
