I just received a call from my daughter's school. They wanted to make sure we got her school bus assignment in the mail so that she would be ready for Tuesday.

Yes, we did, I told the caller, but thank you for following up.

Huh. I thought Chicago Public Schools on academic probation were supposed to be run by incompetents who don't give a rat's ass ( Read more... )

I wish there were more of you and less of those "Waiting For Superman" adherents who seem to think a unionized teacher is the root of all evil.

Thanks. I really struggle to keep my mouth shut when the whole "good school bad school" issue comes up among other parents. "Isn't this just code for 'I don't want my child going to school with poor, black and brown kids!'?"

I'm glad E. goes to a school where they genuinely care about the students. :)

I'm sick of politicians who run down schools, just so they can swoop in and "save the day". A while back in L.A., the mayor wanted to have a "council of mayors" to improve the schools around here. What the hoo-ha do they know about the education field, anyway?

Me too.

Truthfully, I would rather have a council of mayors working on the issue than a school board of business people - provided the mayors weren't Rahm. The Chicago Board of Ed is appointed by the Mayor, and it's no shocker that several individuals sittin' on it are from families who gave a shitload of money to his campaign.

It sounds as if Chicago politics hasn't changed much since I lived there. Oof.

We don't have hard-and-fast plans on Labor Day proper, so I may very well make it downtown.
