you can try to warn (or, better, advise), but some people just don't want to hear it. they may even be quite cognizant of why they're doing something that will be harmful in the long-run but not want to admit it out loud.

it sucks & i'm sorry you had to deal with it multiple times.

and, yes, we are quite stupid :)
