Followers of Fred "God Hates Fags" Phelps are coming to Aberdeen to picket outside a local church that had the temerity to install a gay clergyman. There's a counter demo in the works, I fully intend to be there

Last year Westboro came to the high school in Atlanta where I was teaching. The students decided to hold a counter-protest, but rather than make it anti-Westboro, they made it pro-love. They called it Acceptance Tolerance Love (ATL) and it was really awesome. The reporters who came spent so much time covering the students' efforts that Westboro themselves got almost no news coverage at all. Since the reason the "church" holds these protests is to get news coverage, I thought that was awesome. It was also really nice to see the community come out and rally around the school and promote such a really positive message.

The Huffington Post did a little piece on it here, and you can see some of the counter-protest signs the kids used on the old facebook page.

That's actually a really good idea. I think it's best not to get angry with these people; either take the piss or do what these students did.

October 30th, if it ever goes ahead. They want to protest the Church of Scotland general assembly in Edinburgh the day before, then they're coming to Aberdeen to tell us all how we're all going to hell if we tolerate this gay vicar.

They're going to get publicity either way so I really, really hope the counter demo goes ahead. Hopefully that'll get more coverage than they do.
