In addition to my comment about knowing RA in comparison to other crushes.

I think you are right, it is a whole different ball game to know someone personally than as a public figure, no matter how well or little you know that public figure. You are right too, that good things come from being part of the RA fandom, but even there, the illusion and the reality are not always the same and perspective has to be retained.

Wonderful post! I am certain you are right. It really is more about what we see in him, and being a man of mystery does keep things open to fantasy! But he really is a muse - I will always be grateful for that.

I have to agree with you regarding Richard being a bit of a blank slate. He very rarely says or does anything that would in any way offend people (if ever) and his private life is so very private. I've always felt like he lends himself very well to the creation of some perfect man we all need to conjure up. That's why when people go on protective rampages about respecting "Richard Armitage'" and the limits of fangirling, I can't help roll my eyes anymore. It's not real. We don't know Richard, we only twist scaps of info, bits of characters for our own purpose.
Oh, and we have one hell of a good time doing it! :)

Welcome to the Richard Armitage fandom. It has only been a year for me and I have often pondered why I am so drawn to this man. I mean besides the fact that he is so handsome and beautiful.
