RE: moving... our friend who works at SPU found a place to live... but if you're open to the idea of living in a house with 4-5 others.... we have a friend who lives in a community house in Wallingford really close to I-5...

I'm not sure. I may just end up moving home for a few months, because I would like to try to buy a condo. Does the house your friend lives in allow cats?

RE: Fasting... earlier this year during Lent you also fasted from sugar. I was wondering if you might be willing to give me some pointers and such...

And... if this fast is for Advent, why does it start tomorrow? Advent doesn't start until Dec 2... just curious

Well, I wasn't really fasting from sugar, I just wasn't eating it because it makes me feel better physically. I am not sure if you are looking for pointers about fasting, or about not eating sugar!!

Our Advent starts earlier (it is a 40-day fast).

There are various technical books on comparative Semitic linguistics, but the majority of European grammars of Hebrew would be written for people who are assumed to know an Indo-European language, although I don't know any that draws explicit comparisons. Cyrus Gordon infamously published a monograph in which he argued that Greek, Sanskrit, and Hebrew all derive from a common linguistic source, but that's probably not what you're looking for. What grammar are you using? I used Kelley's "Biblical Hebrew," which was okay but had a large number of maddening typos. Before seminary I tried to teach myself a little with Seow's "Grammar for Biblical Hebrew," which is supposed to be better, but I had a hard time getting in to it, and he made an etymological remark I didn't appreciate. If you have particular questions I may remember enough Hebrew to answer. I still use it on occasion. But I hope you feel better soon!

We're using Seow. I find it confusing, and feel that vocabulary/concepts are introduced without background, and the grammatical vocabulary is not what I am used to.

Maybe Hebrew makes no sense and has no structure? I doubt it, but I am not getting a sense of the structure, and I find that difficult to deal with.

On the contrary, Hebrew makes a lot of sense. I am able to speak it fluently, and I find that it actually does have some sort of structure. Anyway, if you need any help with your Hebrew, I can help.

Ummm, who is this? It would be good to hear about Hebrew from someone who speaks it!
