I have a really, really long post about sponsored communities that we're still working on, but we wanted to go ahead and post an announcement about one of the changes we made already. I was going to suggest a 720x90 banner ad as a replacement for the 16x16 icon. That's gotta be clear enough a distinction, no? ;)

Wikipedia suggests an answer, as ever!

The metaphor doesn't stretch outside countries where our currency is habitually not green in colour. Taking that attitude to an extreme, though, would require the community icon to have an overlaid ¤, and I would idly wager that the solution proposed would confuse forty times fewer people. That crazy ol' generic currency symbol hasn't really caught on in wider usage, somehow.

I appreciate that you're trying to communicate with us without all of the business rhetoric.

About the icon change: I wish that there as more difference between the two icons than just the color, which doesn't really stand out that much. More design should go into it.

I'd suggest a skull and crossbones or a emoticon making an "ew" face, but I'm sure that wouldn't fly with the sponsors.
