One of the best kept secrets about the LiveJournal community is how incredibly generous you all are. It's not just the fact that so many of you volunteer to help LJ out, or are such active participants in communities online. It's what you do to support communities offline that makes us so proud of what LJ is. (A recent example was the way you all ( Read more... )

A quick note to our international members: We know it's frustrating that this is another U.S.-centric effort, but this was a special project that really gave us a unique opportunity to help our students here. Don't worry -- we haven't forgotten about you, and we're sure you agree that better-educated American students will be a good thing for all of us in the future.

I really REALLY appreciate that you addressed this. Thank you. This is something that should be spelled out when you post about geographically limited events, not something we have to dig around and find ourselves. I don't mind not being able to participate in events (the legalese does sound tricky), but I get irritated when I get excited only to have my hopes dashed upon further reading. Please keep it up!

He set us(citizens of U.S.) back a couple hundreds years as far as international communities go, yeah? :/

As far as LJ goes - glad they stated up front it's a US thing and people didn't have to did for it.

This sounds like a really cool program, too.

Oh god yes.
I know money buys a lot of things but still amazed that someone who has such difficulty speaking became a politician. Let alone President.

Wow. They added a lot of states in September.
I'm going to keep an eye on this, see if things are as good as they sound/look and watch for anything localish.

Can non-US folks request a certificate? I'd be happy to be involved in a good cause, wherever in the world it is.

This is a good project, thanks.

Thanks so much for asking. Yes, you may request a certificate and we hope you will!

I think you should clarify this in the post, as many people are confused by the disclaimer. Non-US users can participate, but they can only fund US projects, is the thing.

That makes me much happier. Maybe this is from my perspective as a citizen of a country with crazy close ties to the U.S., but I really have no objection whatsoever in supporting U.S. charities. In fact, I have personally done just that quite a few times!

Yes - glad you asked. Any non-U.S. person may request and use a DonorsChoose.org gift certificate. Thanks for getting involved!

When you say "non-US person", which categories below are you referring to?

1- US citizen living outside the US
2- non-US citizen living in the US
3- non-US citizen living outside the US

Quoting from the DonorsChoose.org website, while redeeming a GC (step 3 - payment):What if I live outside the United Stated?
[...] DonorsChoose.org cannot accept donations from non-US citizens.

Does that also apply to gift certificates issued to people in category 2 or 3 above?

I think the donation is from a US company even if you send it.

I tried and got confirmation that it had been accepted. Interestingly, other family members have not had a reply to their emails so it may be one gift certificate per IP address.

Thank you for this post. And for my fellow non-US residents; I'm sure a lot of us have US friends we could trust to pass money along for us. :)
