It's easy to disable Snap on your Live Journal -- just click on the gear icon in the upper-right corner of any preview and select the "Disable" option.

You could also go to the Snap FAQs to turn Snap off globally, for all websites. (For best results, clear your cache first ( Read more... )

But that doesn't disable it on your LJ, only for you viewing it on LJ sites.

Is it that I'm a paid user that I don't know what you're referring to? Or maybe it's because I'm already using adblock...

I always feel badly for folks that use IE, surf sites like MySpace, and then complain about the ads, spyware, etc.

Soon, they'll be teaching kids in school how to use the internet intelligently.

The teachers would have to know how to use it first to teach it to them.

And yeah, it's turned on by default for Basic and Sponsored Plus, and I think it's off by default for the rest. And it might be because of AdBlock (which I think is a violation of TOS, technically).

Intent means nothing, it's what they actually do with it. Brad used to say there'd never be ads, period. Brad's also got nothing to do with LJ anymore, so anything he has said in the past is totally irrelevant.

You forgot one other way to turn it off: Encourage your friends, and the moderators of the communities you participate in, to turn it off.

The flag that LJ provides appears to work like the image placeholder flag. That is: It works on any page you view as (yourjournal).livejournal.com. So that would be your main page, /friends, and /friendsfriends . If you view a friends page directly, a community directly, or are commenting on the post, the other journal's setting takes precedence. So, to not see snap then, encourage those folks to disable it. This also has the advantage of lowering the number of users with snap enabled on the site, thus (a) providing a demonstrable fact that folks do not want it, which cookies will never do, and (b) hits LJ in the pocketbook, which adblock will never do.

It's not always easy to turn off SNAP. It took me three days to get it to stop, and both LJ and SNAP support were totally useless. It turns out if you are security conscious enough, you set options that won't let SNAP do what ever it feels like.

Because SNAP is badly designed, you have to ACCEPT THIRD PARTY COOKIES in IE6.

Go to Tools -> Internet Option -> PRIVACY tab -> ADVANCED -> then choose either ACCEPT or PROMPT for "Third Party Cookies"

Honestly - does anyone LIKE this stupid thing? I haven't gotten ANY positive feedback on it. I'm a Permanent User - I didn't pay to have the stupid thing and don't want it EVER.

Same thoughts here. I wonder what kind of outcry'd be needed to get LJ to get rid of the bloody things?

I have emailed LJ Feedback about it twice, and they basically say tough shit. You can just disabled by going to settings on the snap preview window. In my second email I explain that was not good enough because you have to disable it everytime you clear your cookies. In their reply, they again said tough shit, and told me to make a feature suggestion in support for a snap-disabler setting in your LJ account.

Things have been building up with LJ and this is really the last straw for me. I'm not renewing my paid account when it expires and I'm very glad I didn't buy the perm acct when it was on sale a little while back.

*sigh*

Someone in the news thread said it came in handy for the art community s/he maintained. So, there's at least one...

The conspiracy-minded out there will tell you LJ implemented this feature so that users could be held more accountable for the things outside to which they post links.
