its funny. because girls will obsess over the fact that hes doing it just to make her sad, when half the time guys dont even know that she likes him.

Kingsolver's view of males is very one dimensional. By making Esteban the only male character that isn't an asshole she is basically saying that she wants all guys to be like Esteban, but she fails to realize that Estebans don't exist, there are no perfect guys, there are just people.
