Samsung S5 if you can find one should be somewhere around that price point now. My newish S7 is actually not as good as the S5s we've had IMO (and I'd avoid the 6).

My fear with something like the S5 is that the form factor might feel too big?

Currently also looking at the A3 2016, and the Huawei P9 Lite.

I think I need to go poke some in a shop :)

smallclanger and I have both gone S4-mini->S5 (and I think imc might have done too? I can't remember what he had before the S5). It was less of an adjustment than I feared, plus the similarities made it easy to switch to. But yeah, you won't know until you actually hold some. :)
