Awww. As the inspiration for this post, I feel obliged to comment.

In my opinion, it seems to me that morality is tied to a sense of empathy. The more empathic the person, it seems to me, the likelier they are to be 'moral', at least by the socially accepted standard. Not just the reluctance to harm other people or a willingness to give dollar bills to homeless people - these people come to a full stop at stop signs, consistently tip 20% at restaurants and refrain from solipsism.

people who give the homeless money even when they're low, because they realize they could be worse?

Good question, which itself brings up a whole host of other questions. Is it inherently more moral to give a dollar to a homeless person when you are yourself impoverished, versus a wealthy person who will never miss it, a la the widow's mite ( ... )

I will touch upon this later, my last post just sucked the brain right out of me, but I think your friend has the right idea. By simply acknowledging that he's a part of society as a whole, and trying to better it, he's found the inherent nature of good.

Most of us should be so lucky.
