Of art and the passage of history

I've been looking the history and architecture at the Pyramids recently. They bemuse me. For over 3800 years, they were the tallest structures in the world. They are the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World. Their very construction is still staggering to conceive.

As a testament to the Pyramids, they were considered ancient by the Romans. Themselves master architects, they were expected to study the Pyramids and even kneeled at the tomb of Hemiunu, designer of the Giza Pyramids.

The Pyramids were only visible in the distance from where Napoleon fought, but French cavalry under the great Lasalle did ride through them and hit the Mameluke rear. As to the campaign being unsuccessful, you are correct, but I'd like to add that I'm shocked that Napoleon's successors in Egypt held out until 1802.

I find it interesting that you mentioned Napoleon as a monument. His admirers turned him into that, with stoic poses on the Alps. His detractors made him a cartoon. Neither can be true of course.

My favorite is the first painting.

My favorite too is the first one. That's why I put it first.

I figured that the reality of the man is somewhere between monument and cartoon, tho' oddly the first thing I think about when someone says Napoleon is the beginning of The Count of Monte Cristo.
