Dragarnuss, your reply was pretty much on target- his father was killed when he was 13, directly after they'd had a riproaring argument: he blamed himself for his father's death- his dad was angry and made a fatal mistake with some machinery that you just don't make mistakes with, he felt if he'd been there or hadn't fought with his father it wouldn't have happened, he wasn't there when his dad died- and he basically changed personality afterward, started drinking and taking extreme risks with his life. He froze- and just stayed frozen, despite every effort on the part of others to reach him, including me.

It doesn't excuse in any way that he carried his issues over in his dealings with his OWN son, but does contribute to the 'didn't care' discussion.
