Revised My Very First Story... and other rantings and ramblings

Mar 18, 2013 16:43

Unfortunately, I've felt like warmed-over crap since Christmas.  After a ton of tests last week, my doctor's office just called today to tell me to go pick up a 14-day round of antibiotics.  Hooray! That's the 3rd round of antibiotics I've been on this year.  So, yeah, sick and tired of being sick and tired.  Anyway, it's probably not surprising ( Read more... )

writing is hard, hunting and slaying series, ramblings

I hope you feel better and shake this thing.

My old fics make me shake my head and wonder what I was thinking.

Fangirls and boys can be such asshats.

I hate when the fic police starts seriously what is a bad fic? What I back button from is not always what others will. There are BFN's in other fandoms that I see get rec'ed for everything and they just are not my cup of tea. I just scroll past whatever they post and everyone is happy. Mostly me ;)

Threats O.o that is insane why would you threaten anyone in fandom (or otherwise)
I may be a bit sensitive I was wanked pretty hard in an old fandom.

Sorry people are not bright or use common sense or basic manners. >_<

I totally agree, everything is relative with fic. There are things I'm just not interested in that are sometimes highly popular. We all have different tastes. I suppose I just don't understand the psychology behind some of this crap and it gets on my nerves. When I feel like dirt, I generally look to fandom for fun and escape. It just boggles the mind that some people want to make it so hostile.

The nastiness is one reason why I don't get too involved in fandom, I just like to read the stories. It's not just fandom that is nasty - it's an unfortunate side effect of social media and the Internet.
I'm Catholic, so last week I was watching the events in Rome with great interest. The abuse that was directed at Pope Francis within minutes of his election was unbelievable - abuse from fellow Catholics who theoretically accept that the Pope is the successor of St Peter, and the representative of Jesus Christ. And it was Catholics from both the 'traditional' and 'progressive' sides. I guess he must be doing something right if he's upsetting everyone.
I wish more people would remember a) if you can't say anything nice, maybe it 's better if you don't say anything, and b) if you wouldn't say it to their face, don't type it.
Hiding behind keyboards and pseudonyms makes a lot of people very brave.

I also meant to say, I hope the antibiotics work for you. It can be such a bugger when an infection won't shift, or the docs can't find the cause.

I really enjoyed reading Grand Canyon over on TTH. I don't remember it being too overblown with epithets or commas. I read it to the end and the sequel. You didn't refer to their eyes as being 'hazel orbs' or 'green orbs' did you? I usually stop reading at that point.

LOL, no orbs of any kind. Thank goodness. And, thank you :) Don't get me wrong, I love that story. It was the first thing I ever sat down and finished and had the nerve to post. I'm always trying to do better, though, and right now I'm a very harsh self critic, because I feel so yucky :P

I agree, social media has its issues. I feel sorry for kids growing up in it. I really worry about my neices because I remember how bad it was to have someone talk about you in school and it get back to you. Imagine what it would be like now that these kids go straight to Facebook with their latest "scoop". On a good day I like to think it doesn't reflect true human nature, but sometimes I wonder.

I'm also not Catholic, but I bet all of that is hard to hear. You'd think he'd get a chance, but I guess bitching is more fun.

I liked Grand Canyon! It was much better than my first attempt, which is absolutely awful.

I had a look at the bad!fic lj page. I thought it was really mean, and there were some fics on there that I really liked. If people don't like a fic, they should stop reading it, not post it somewhere and make fun of it. They would never do that to someone's face (I would hope not, anyway), and half of the people writing these fics are just kids. I know from the occasional bad review on ff.net that it can make you feel awful, even if you get 30 people saying nice things and one saying something mean. Seeing your fic on a list like that could ruin someones week. It's bullying, even if it says it's all in good fun, and it's not cool.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks :) I love Grand Canyon because it is my first story and there are things about it I'm really proud of. Still, I think its good to go back and learn from my own errors. I guess I like to push myself :-/

I did not look at the bad fic list because I didn't know where it was and I'm just not in the mood for all that negativity. Who knows, I might be on there and then I'd really blow my top :P

Thanks for the well wishes. I hope I feel better soon, too. I can't stand myself. I'm hateful!

I actually like Grand Canyon but it sounds like a good idea to go over the first fic. It's always different to see it with a bit more distance
Thankfully my first fics were never seen by more than 2 other people and I already wrote for a few years before I switched the language, so I'm still relatively happy with my first published fic.

And to the insanity of some parts of the fandom, I hear you. I very happily stay in my little (mostly) sane corner and just watch the whole insanity from a safe distance.

I hope you get well soon

Thanks, I like Grand Canyon too. I'm proud of it and I guess I shouldn't give the impression that I'm desperately unhappy with it. Quite a few people enjoyed it, it was mine, and I finished it and went on to write a sequel that I'm even more proud of :) I still feel accomplished about that, plus there are many things I think I got right. But, there are things I got wrong and I just want to be better, I suppose. You're right about looking at things at a distance. It was truly shocking to me to go back and see errors that I didn't even know I made! I edited that thing a thousand times before publishing each chapter AND it still had issues. Chuck's right, writing is hard ;) But the exercise really was worth it, I think.

Our little corner of fandom may not be completely sane, but we're not mean spirited. I'll happily take that any day!
