Today was supposedly "First Aid" seminar and training. Instead, I sat for nine hours listening to the same lecture (Basic Life Support) I attended last week. Ugh! Thank God I won't be kissing the dummies (again) in tomorrow's return demonstration.

My knees hurt...

...for kneeling on the floor while simulating CPR and respiratory rescuciation (rescue breathing) on three imaginary victims: adult, child and infant.

Had to finish the five CPR cycles, thirty breaths for the adult dummy, and forty breaths each for the child and infant dummies.

Now I know how it feels to be a "first aider".

After being deferred as a possible blood donor today, the doctor who did the physical exam advised me to have my blood examined. With another friend/volunteer who was also deferred for the same reason (low BP. How we both managed working on a busy shift and feeling nothing seemed amazing. It's probably my stupidity for not knowing what day it is today that almost got me in trouble. Working in a government hospital situated in the city of Manila, where it's also near an indigent area will often put your life at risk. Two months and a half after, Omi is finally kicked out from the emergency room. And the area rotation happened right after my little conflict with a senior staff because of a patient's chart.

Like, dude, when will volunteers-soon-to-be-hired get a chance to write in the nurse's notes? How are we supposed to learn if we only rely on verbal orders?  ( Read more... )

Last Wednesday on my 2-10 pm shift, I encountered a patient whose diagnosis I couldn't read (thank you Dr. BEEP! for your wonderful steno-styled handwriting!). The patient was experiencing chills because of, what I assumed, his very high body temperature.
