i remember having hamsters when we lived in colorado.
the first time they bred i touched the babies
hairless things unseeing and mewing helplessly
and the mother began to eat every single one of them
suffocating them in her cheeks until the sides of her face quit moving.

had three little things.
i went to school; they were crackling and mewing when i left.
when i came home there were none and there wasn't any blood, anywhere.
it was miraculous.
one time the father of those things bit my thumb so hard i threw him against the wall and he had a seizure and died soon thereafter.
now, that's just a senseless act of animal cruelty.
but it hurt really really bad, and i bled, and it stung, and he could have infected me.
so.
but, i've never told that to anyone before. so how does that make you feel?

i think it's natural to do really disgusting things to pets when you're younger.
i used to catch snakes, and toads, and lizards and things, and leave them in cages without food. i didn't understand the concept of them needing to eat so i didn't worry about it. and by morning, or soon after, they'd be dead and hollowed out inside the cage.
i too had a gerbil.
it got out and i later saw my cat walking around with it hanging out of its mouth. it had a huge hole in its side that i didn't think was going to get any better, and then one day it just disappeared.
gerbils are bad luck pets.
