I think you should go for it. You learn quite a bit about yourself and other people and about body language and stuff. And asking someone out for coffee or a beer isn't really leading people on, it's simply asking someone out for a coffee or a beer- unless they are a crazy person they are not going to expect anything more than than. And while practising how to talk to ladies you practising talking to strangers in general! Win!

Also pickup lines are wonderful when used as an icebreaking/self depreciating joke. They are pretty sad (and either unintentionally funny or full on creepy) when they are used for serious.

Stick with the usual method, and then randomly take out other ladies. See what it's like. And if you think you're being cowardly it's just because you know you could be bold about it.
