Some of you that know me from college remember the Gear Factory forums. They were dear to me, because they were mine. Not content to install some free message board like every other E/N site at the time, I actually built my own. Twice ( Read more... )

Man, but this time you have to do the whole thing with smart caching and RESTful APIs just to make it difficult.

Yeah, I need to think up some retarded excessive features for no good reason. Like the ability to upload XML and XSLT docs through your mobile phone, which are then parsed and made into posts. In Swedish.

It's funny, having watched people use my message boards for years, I have a pretty solid opinion of what features are worthwhile. But I had to convince folks that haven't used forums very much. Things I took for granted, like quoting posts, locking threads, even editing posts were debated.

Why do you hate the "reply to this" link so much?

Also, Gear Club totally worked. Until Jon hacked it. Also, the whole trivia points thing didn't work for very long.

...But other than that, it worked perfectly!

I have a forum for my students to do their journals online. You would die. It's Phpbb. And I administrate it. Me! Hahahahahaha. Me administrate something online. Too funny.
