hm. I lived in oakland for 5 months last year and experienced more diversity than ever in my lifetime... that was pretty much the main reason I loved oakland. Oakland was also the most sketchy and violent place I've ever been, but the problems weren't just caused by certain races or groups, it was honestly everyone from what I saw. Maybe your experience has just been showing you the people who fit sterotypes, but even when I did see sterotypes proven true, I didn't judge a group of people overall by those certain individuals.

This comment might make you mad, but this post made me lose some respect for you. :(

haha.. i can't believe you'd lose respect for a good friend based upon the fact that he was placed in situations that by popular opinion said he would be placed in..

man.. sure as fuck glad i never had to be near you longer than minutes..

and damn, you lived in oakland, you're badass.. clearly more racially diverse than say, boston? riiiight..

i mean c'mon, you just judged a good friend of a long time based upon his take on the facts that he deals with..

how funny, i NEVER would have thought that a white american college girl would pass judgement on anybody..

who knew?!

Not many of my liberal opinions have changed beyond my tolerance level though.

I guess I took this to mean you had lost tolerance for the groups you had just described. While I don't know what was running through your head when you wrote this, all I have to go by is my own interpretation of what you ACTUALLY WROTE, not what you thought.

Dave, have you ever lived in Oakland? And I think that by saying what I thought to TJ, I am treating him more like a friend than if I'd sat back saying nothing.

TJ, I care about you a lot and you are a good friend, which is why this upset me. I'm glad you're not judging them, only observing. That wasn't the tone I picked up from your post, so I'm glad you clarified it.

ok, i came into this conversation a bit late, but dave; get fucked.

you are hands down the most judgmental and hateful person i've ever encountered in my life.

it makes me sad there isn't a stereotype involving people like you dying untimely deaths..

I totally get you on this rant. I was born in Atlanta and moved to Charlotte at the age of 12. When I started high school I was bussed all the way across the city to a school nicknamed West Chocolate. I think I had about two or three other white people in my classes. The school was locked down one day because an African American student decided to run around campus with a gun. A cab driver was shot in the head and killed right in front of the school. The band/orchestra teacher (also African American) was arrested years after I changed schools for stealing students' instruments and pawning them off AND for having sexual relations with students.
The black students would always take up the entire hallway and stop suddenly to say something like, "Sharika girl! Where you been? Holla!" And if you just happen to run into their ghetto booties you're in a world of trouble because there's always more than one of them....
