I've not taken part in one of these things before, so this is probably going to be a dumb question.
I haven't quite got my head around the posting date - the way I read your information is that posting takes place after 12noon Chicago time... how long will that posting window be open?
The reason I ask is that I live in the UK and this is therefore 6pm UK time. I would not normally be at my computer for at least two hours before and about five hours after this time on a Tuesday.
No, that's a good question!shusuJune 1 2007, 16:33:12 UTC
I thought I knew my way around ficathons, then the last few I did, I was wondering just exactly this too!
The posting window will remain open as long as it takes to get everyone in. We're ... easy. *cough* There is a very good chance that posting will be open before that time if people finish early -- we could just moderate all the posts and hold them in queue until that noon.
That deadline remains a hard one, though, as this is when everyone will expect to see their gifts. You can watch the community as the deadline gets closer, or if you're unavailable before then, e-mail one of the mods, and we'll pass that information to the community.
Just wondering, but your header example says John/Rodney, affair with Vala, does that mean that the 'Thing' doesn't have to end up with John/Vala staying together, ie: they can be a catalyst for another pairing to get together in the end or even end as a threesome if we were so inclined?

Yes! That would fall into John/Vala "before" or "during". Deciding on that possibility will figure mightily into the sign-up, because I want to be as certain as possible that the recipient is so inclined. Some of the general catgories in step 2 cover that.
The sign-up is only going to ask what each participant likes or doesn't like. If your recipient specifically asked for that fic about sprogs (that's their kids, by the way), and you wanted to write that prompt, then that's what you'd write.
If one doesn't wish to create that Thing in your example, an easy way is to tick off "adultery" and "kids". The big thing is that it's a challenge, and it would be nice to err on the side of trying new things. :)
Now, if you want to potentially receive that fic, it might be best to break that down into "sprogs (conceived with other people)" and "first time fic"; step 2 prompts require words, phrases, or plot points
( ... )
