Superheroes with disabilities?

So today I started nannying! It was awesome and I'm already sure I'm going to have a super fun summer and really enjoy the kids. There are three, and the oldest has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which means he's pretty severely physically disabled. He was wearing some Superman accessories so I asked if he liked Superman, and it came out that the reason ( Read more... )

Hey, hon. I sent the info and link to a friend who's big into comic books. I'm betting he can name a few!

*hugs*

Babs Gordon (DC Comics) -- though IDK if she "counts" since she was Batgirl until she became disabled, then she became Oracle and did most of her crime-fighting from behind a desk, but she'll always be a superhero to meeee.

Logan Cale from Dark Angel is kind of a superhero. Okay, not really. >.> *flees*

She sounds like a totally legit superhero and badass! I've already told him about her and Xavier because they are the most relevant to his interests. I also like telling him about the superheroes who use their brains because he's not so into studying right now. :P

Batgirl/ Barbra Gordon. (DC) She became disabled when she was shot in the spine by the Joker. Ironically enough, she became a much more interesting charcter as the Oracle than Batgirl.

Toph from tv series Avatar, the Last Airbender. She's blind but is a very skilled martial artist.

Thor/Donald (DC) Blake has a limp.

Echo (DC) is deaf.

Cassandra Cain/Batgirl (DC) is mute. (But now she talks, I think)

Hammer (DC) Paralyzed from the neck down.

Pepper Potts (Marvel) Got blown up and rapaired with robot parts.

Rick (Image) Loses a hand and becomes mentally unstable.
Dale (Image) Loses a foot.
Andrea (Image) Loses half her ear and has a permanent scar across her cheek.

Nick Fury (Marvel) Blind in one eye

Slade (DC) Blind in one eye.

Speedy (DC) Had a drug addiction as a teen.

Tony Chu (Image) Loses an ear and has problems eating.

Blindfold (Marvel) Has no eyes.

I got curious--I'm not much into comic books but I do love them--so I Googled and found this and this. And this!, which is surprisingly recent. Silver Scorpion.

Professor Xavier is my favorite though. Also there are a few superheroes that don't actually have powers at all (like Batman) but are still badass. I think that's a big draw for the superhero culture--most superheroes are different, in their own way, but are still special.

Oooh, I'm especially interested in the Silver Scorpion now. Thank you! My boy is a little bit scared of violence so I'll have to look up how graphic that one gets with the war stories but I think having a new/young wheelchair-bound character is great for him!

And Xavier is my favorite also. I'm going to show him some clips of Xavier on YouTube soon and see if he thinks he'd like to watch the movie. :) I'm also trying to figure out if they have more kid-friendly compilations of these comic books (since, again, he's easily scared) at the library or something!

Everyone seems to love her! I like talking to him about the ones who use their minds to be superheroes because he's not super into studying right now and I want to change that. :P So she and Xavier are on top of my list right now!

Thank you! I hope so. :x
