We use Ghee from time to time. I second going to an Asian or Mediterranean or Indian market for specialty things. I got like, a pound of turmeric (I exaggerate only a little) for about $2 at our Asian market. Our Asian market is a bit... scary in some ways (there's a fish smell coming from **somewhere** but I never quite know where, lol), but it's worth the trip for all those incidental spices, or if you want specific soy sauces (there's more soy sauce out there for more cultures than you can believe!)

Thanks! Take a look at turmeric in a rather small bottle at your local supermarket and compare its price to what you got at that Indian store ... it'll rock your socks off!

If you like heat ... the Indian markets have the absolute best lal mirch there ... it usually comes in two varieties ... hot ... and hotter than hot!

I actually don't use much soya sauce any more ... doing less Chinese and Japanese cooking lately ... these two cuisines are not particularly oriented to proper vegetarian guidelines at all.

When my father and mother visited me in San Francisco my father insisted on eating Chinese food in Chinatown. After we got there [parking was hellacious] I first took them to a Chinese grocery to let them see what the ingredients were that make Chinese food. Okay ... there were live fish and crabs, salted fish, dried mushrooms ... the salted cuttlefish ranks among the worst stench. My father wound up on the curb outside in a dizzy state. We didn't eat in a Chinese restaurant that day!

Have you tried or smelled stinky tofuThe ( ... )

Ick on baby soup, I'll pass!! Blech.

Would you move more to veganism some day, do you think? I know not all in India are vegetarian... I abhor the US meat factory, but I'm weak. I have given up pork altogether; I RARELY eat beef, and only if it's from a source I am more inclined to trust. I will buy chicken and turkey, 80% of the time it's organic/free range, and that's mostly my meat these days, and even it kind of makes me weird at times. I've always had carnivore tendencies, even as a small child, but the older I get, the weirder I get about it.

Have not smelled stinky tofu!

No, never to vegan, not that I won't eat it. But to vegetarians that are against eggs, they should be against dairy for the exact same reason. Picking up some eggs that are just sitting around and drinking milk from some cow destined for McDonald's is equivalent IMHO. I present this as an argument sometimes ... and get the reaction of a blank expression ( ... )
