Someone here on LJ recommended The Passage to me, probably when I read The Road some years ago, as an antidote to that terribly grim post-apocalypse vision. I got it on Paperbackswap and saved it for when when I needed an engrossing read, because the recommender (was it you?) said it was a page-turner. I was giving Mr. Strange and Mr. Norrell by my sister-in-law, who is a writer herself, for my birthday. It is a HUGE book but I am still having to control myself to keep from reading it too fast. A bit to get into but once you do. . .

Everyone loves that book! I'll put it on my list. In the end, PBswap is cheaper than library fines for me and allows me to stockpile all the books I think I want to read and sit on top of them hissing and breathing fire.

Thank you! I can't get any love for "I'd rather have a llama next to me than a laminectomy." Maybe I need to try it on some doctors. Maybe no one remembers "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy." Even though it must have been a tee shirt.
