Cagalli approaches the medical wing, seeming like she's heading to visit them - she certainly looks distressed.
But then...
She pauses in front of the door for a moment, hesitant. She turns, and begins walking away. ...I'm not going to be much help after something like that. What the hell am I supposed to say?
As soon as Simon heard about what happened during the mission he made a beeline for the infirmary. He was afraid something would happen, but he never expected what he heard. Nonetheless, he felt it best that he head down there and make sure that everything was all right. And if it wasn't, to give them what they needed to make things better.
He walked into the room where Shinji and Toji were, a solemn expression on his face. "Hey."
Shinji cringes when Simon appears before them. Out of everyone on base, Simon was the person he least wanted to see - the person, more than anyone else, he wanted to hide his shame from. Tears leap to his eyes despite himself and he bites back a pathetic whimper.
"Simon," his voice cracks. His eyes are wide, fearful of the repercussions, verbal or otherwise, that await him. "Simon, I... I'm sorry... I... I disappointed you, the way I acted, it was... unforgivable. Please. Please don't... look at me..."
Simon took a seat in a vacant chair. "Shinji. You did what you thought was the best thing to do. I don't agree with it, but from what I heard, you were also under a crapload of pressure. And then there was that Angel before it.
"Besides, for all we know, that..." Simon was tempted to finish the sentence with "asshole," but didn't want to insult the kid's father so flagrantly in front of him, even if everyone in the room hated Gendo. "For all we know, Gendo would've activated the dummy plug anyway if you attacked and held back. I stopped in the hangar, and most of the mechs that went out for that looked like absolute shit. If he knew you were holding back -- even a tiny bit -- I'd bet Lagann that he'd have activated the dummy plug.
"The problem wasn't you. You were stuck in a Catch 22. The real problem came from the Angel, the dummy plug, and...and the guy who ordered it."
Shinji shakes his head violently back and forth, "That doesn't matter! I was still stuck in there, watching. Helpless. Just like I always am. I thought... I thought that I finally..."
Shinji looks away, shamed by Simon's very presence. "I thought I could finally make you proud of me. Fighting with all of my heart and spirit and maybe... beginning to understand that thing, the Eva. But I just let you down, like the good for nothing I am. Maybe Father was right. I can't beat Angels without losing my fucking mind in the process."
Lamia is not quite sure why she is here, though she rationalises her presence by telling herself that continued observations of the EVA pilots are important to her mission as well.
She arrives with a typical 'get well' care package sold at the hospital shops, having researched that it is normal to get such a gift, and sets it up by the table near the beds.
