I was reading an article that said that hybrid cars do not get near the gas mileage that the EPA says they do.

I ask my friends who drive hybrid cars, what type of game mileage are you actually seeing?

Our first-gen Prius gets, realistically, 40-45 mpg, depending on accessory usage (heater and AC are big factors) and type of driving. Oddly enough, we get better mileage on the highway, even though these cars should be getting better city miles thanks to regenerative braking. It's probably my unhealthy addiction to rapid acceleration (closely related to my addiction to not getting rear-ended by Atlanta motorists....)

Yes, but .... tonyvila July 21 2004, 08:25:23 UTC

I am reducing noxious emissions overall by about 90%
If I drove like low_res_man (i.e.: like a grandma on Nyquil), I'd be getting 50+ :)

Is that how your family came over - in a Mig?

BTW - The saturn did not get anywhere near 40MPG at 116 MPH - I actually felt like it was going to go airborne and swerve into a ditch on it's own.

Not a good feeling.

on a bad day, my prius gets 44.4
I have never seen it go any longer than that.
When i am driving as efficiently as I possibly can, I can get as much as 55 mpg, but since i am lazy, its more like 50

Also, I seem to recall my friend Sam freaking out because he was crossing the country and his honda insite was dipping under 60 for the first time ever

I'm in the same boat as Tony... Being primarily a V-6 Pathfinder driver (hey, I still get 19 MPG, don't look at me like that!), i'm used to a certain amount of get-up-and-go without knowing the consequences. The Prius certainly can give you that get-up-and-go (despite popular misconceptions to the contrary, it has good power), but as Tony says, it's not designed to be driven by dragsters all the time. Really, I think that what real-time MPG data does is tell you how efficiently you're driving, and allows you to adjust. After driving the Prius for a few days, my habits change. Then I get back in my car and they go all to hell.

Tiffany gets her 50 MPG by driving the way we all should drive... she just has info encouraging her to. If all cars had this, we'd all get better mileage.

The worst i've seen our 2003 Prius do is 44 MPG, with 3 1/2 people in the car and the A/C on MAX.
