LJ username: RiverOtter1951 What sources do you have experience in? The Hobbit,LOTR, Silm, History of Middle Earth Are there time periods or races that you have more knowledge of? Humans especially Rohan and pre Third Age, Dwarves, Briefly describe your strong points as a beta: I was trained by a professional proof reader and have a degree in English. I am strong in grammar including tenses and can edit with American or British spellings. I edit like an English paper with grammar, spelling, comments, suggestions and questions to ponder [which might be reader questions or ideas for expanding or future stories].
I belonged to a literary discussion group with Tolkien as the main focus so I have heard lots of viewpoints and research suggestions as well.
Hi, RiverOtter. You've been assigned Virodiel as the author you will beta. She does not have an LJ account, so if you will please send me an email at aelfwina at gmail dot com, I will send you her contact information.
What sources do you have experience in? (The Hobbit, LotR, the Silm, etc.): I am most familiar with The Hobbit and LotR. I've only read through the Silm for research for my own stories.
Are there time periods or races that you have more knowledge of?: I'm most familiar with characters and events in the Third Age, with a particular emphasis on hobbits and the Fellowship in general. I wouldn't be a great beta for Elvish history from the Silm. I prefer not to read or beta stories with an emphasis on violence, sadness, cruelty, or character death.
Briefly describe your strong points as a beta: I feel that my language and grammatical skills are good, and that I can catch most canon errors. I would stay within whatever bounds an author requests regarding suggestions or plot assistance.
LJ username: lin4gondor What sources do you have experience in? (The Hobbit, LotR, the Silm, etc.) Mainly LotR, but I am also very comfortable with The Hobbit and the Silmarillion/Unfinished Tales, as well as some experience with HoME. Are there time periods or races that you have more knowledge of? I write mostly 3rd Age Men, but I am comfortable with any age or race. Briefly describe your strong points as a beta: I have a very good grasp of grammar and spelling, and have actual work experience as a copy editor.
LJ username: labourslamp What sources do you have experience in? (The Hobbit, LotR, the Silm, etc.) Most experience with LotR; some of the Silm and The Hobbit. I own Letters (the one with the better index), UT, CoH, and HoM-E I-VI, XI, and XII, AoTB, and other sundries. Are there time periods or races that you have more knowledge of? Hobbits, and the Fourth Age. Knowledge-wise I specialize in the economic, social, and cultural history of the Shire, and I should be able to separate the evidence I've found in canon from my own personal conclusions. Briefly describe your strong points as a beta: I'm willing to give as much or as little help as the writer needs: I have tons of experience proofreading and giving tips for polishing, but I've also served as a sounding-board for ideas, characterization, logic, etc., earlier in the process.
LJ username: baranduin What sources do you have experience in? (The Hobbit, LotR, the Silm, etc.)The Hobbit, LotR, some Silm, the short stories Are there time periods or races that you have more knowledge of?Most knowledgeable about Hobbit and LotR material. Least knowledgeable about Silm so would not be anyone's first choice if knowledge of content is important to the author. Briefly describe your strong points as a beta:Strong technical skills (spelling, punctuation, grammar, plot inconsistencies, POV and tense inconsistencies, canon facts) and strong skills in the less technical and more subjective areas (voice, pacing, word choice and anachronisms, etc.).
Dreamflower just told me that I get you as a beta. Hooray! What would be the best way to get/keep in touch? My livejournal tag is thunderatiger and my email address is thunderalaura@juno.com. I've got a couple gmail addresses, too, if you'd like to use their IM. Just let me know what works best and then we can get working on this very strange story I've started to write!
