if you are interested, i can give more info: but basically, it's the first half of the menstrual cycle - beginning of bleeding to ovulation- where the variation in length tends to fall, while the second half tends to be a fairly consistent 14 days. so, once you know you've ovulated, you can predict when your period will be. you can figure out ovulation by charting your temperatures and/or paying attention to cervical fluid. this all helps you figure out what's going on in any particular cycle, rather than extrapolating from cycles past, which obviously doesn't work so well if yours vary month to month.
