I was sitting eating my breakfast today and i was thinking to myself about straight edge and veganism. Both are often times thought to be very pushy towards others. I mean who wants to be told what to do right? I dont like people coming up to me and shoving things into my face. Its your decision to live a certain way. As i was thinking this i was ( Read more... )

that was awesome. the only thing id like to point out is the fact that living a vegan lifestyle is NOT a personal choice. i mean, yeah you do choose whether or not you are going to be vegan, but your choice is not based on your personal needs or wants. being vegan is a selfless decision and is something that is done for other animals and the earth, as opposed to thinking anthropocentrically like most humans do. so many people say being veg is a personal choice, but i dont understand how it is unless you are veg only because of the health benefits. i think that if you are aware of what is going on with meat, dairy, fur, etc. than you are obligated to be vegan, whether you want to be or not. ok, i should stop there before i get carried away.

good points.

i think that EVERYONE "falls into" lifestyle choices. it's just the nature of human relations. i'm sure you must have had some revelation or personal experience that really spiked your beliefs, whereas someone who is pro-life must have had some external forces pushing them.. like witnessing an abortion.

i don't know how far neuroscience has come, or if it has went into this, but it seems like the act of "choosing" a lifestyle isn't bundled with the human brain. choices in themselves come from external experiences, relationships, etc, so wouldn't EVERYBODY "fall into" something one way or another? i'm sure you've had a revelation that spiked your beliefs for animal rights and such, and i'm sure that people with conservative beliefs that support abortion have witnessed one and how harsh it is. what i'm trying to get it is that our choices are nothing but a product of "falling into" something, or receiving feedback from our surroundings.

just my two cents

PREACH. when it comes to veganism people need to be educated. we're not forcing them to do anything, but many people wont educate themselves...so we gotta do it.

"but many people wont educate themselves"

a comment like this would usually push away the casual listener. who wants to be treated like they are apathetic, ignorant goons? i sure don't. this sort of mentality is veganism's weakness, in my opinion.

people should prove me wrong then.
however, i understand what you're saying, and i realize that some people DO educate themselves or take the time to listen to what others have to say. im just generalizing here...
